About Urban Futures Indonesia
Urban Futures (UF) is a 5-year (2023–2027) global programme that integrates urban food systems, youth wellbeing and climate action. It is managed by Hivos, the Humanist and Social Innovation Foundation (Humanis), and local partners, networks and experts. Urban Futures operates in 10 cities in Colombia (Cali and Medellín), Ecuador (Manabí and Quito), Indonesia (Bandung and West Manggarai), Zambia (Chongwe and Kitwe) and Zimbabwe (Bulawayo and Mutare). These intermediary cities vary in size but have in common that they are rapidly developing, connecting metropolitan and rural areas or different clusters of cities within an urban system, and managing flows of people, goods, capital, information and knowledge. Each of these cities presents different challenges and opportunities.

Urban Futures' vision is “INCLUSIVE AND CLIMATE RESILIENT FOOD SYSTEM“.
Cities implementing the program become more livable, with increased green spaces and food landscapes that enhance climate resilience, social cohesion and well-being. Communities take ownership of their food systems, articulate their priorities and grow and demand healthy and sustainable food. Young people, in collaboration with other actors, influence decision-making processes and access to quality employment opportunities in the food sector. Food value chains become shorter, providing healthy and sustainable food that is accessible, affordable and attractive.
Four Main Goals of the Urban Futures Program:
- Inclusive, transparent and participatory food policies and governance, with active involvement of young people and women, through multi-stakeholder collaboration.
- Young people bring to life the narrative of an inclusive, climate-conscious and sustainable city to encourage healthier and more environmentally friendly food consumption behaviors and patterns.
- Agri-food systems adopt good practices that are sustainable, regenerative and climate-resilient.
- Increasing resources and opportunities from multiple stakeholders—private, government, multilateral, and community-based—creates an inclusive and climate-adaptive entrepreneurship ecosystem that supports the participation of youth and women in food system initiatives.
Cross-Sectoral Priorities
- Linking to share and learn (Linking and Learning)
- Gender equality and inclusion
- Technology and digitalization
